No New Posts Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Anahiem Mighty Ducks   The Mighty Ducks first tasted success not on National Hockey League ice, but on Hollywood's silver screen. Disney's "The Mighty Ducks" preceded the NHL team and became an instant success. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim played their first NHL game in the 1993-94 season. In the summer of that year, the Ducks drafted goaltender Guy Hebert as the first ever Duck in the expansion draft. In that same year's junior entry draft, the Mighty Ducks selected Paul Kariya as their first ever draft pick. Kariya played his (NCAA) college hockey at Maine and won the Hobey Baker award as a freshman. Though small in stature, Paul Kariya was considered one of the more skilled prospects and he did not disappoint in the NHL, going on to become the Ducks' franchise player in their first decade of existence.

No New Posts Dallas Stars
Dallas Stars   The Dallas Stars started a long way from Dallas, Texas. In 1967 Walther Bush was part of an ownership group comprising of several Minnesotans who bought one of the National Hockey League's first six expansion franchises, forming the Minnesota North Stars. The North Stars started play in the 1967-68 season calling the Metropolitan Sports Arena in Bloomington home. The team had good success in the early going, making the NHL playoffs for the first four years. The Stars continued to progress through the 1970s, absorbing the players of the Cleveland Barons in 1978 and eventually making their first ever Stanley Cup appearance (losing to the Islanders) in 1981. The rest of the eighties saw the North Stars continue to make the playoffs on a regular basis, with solid play from Bobby Smith, Neal Broten, and Dino Ciccareli.

LA Kings   The Los Angeles Kings were founded in 1967 when Canadian born millionaire Jack Kent Cooke bought the rights to the NHL expansion franchise. The Kings split their first season between Long Beach and Los Angeles before settling for the Inglewood Forum during the winter of 1967. With stars like Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, and Butch Goring, the Kings continued to build on their hockey success by making nine straight NHL playoff appearances from 1974 through 1982. The mid-1980s saw the Kings fall into a lull. But the Kings franchise took a dramatic turn in 1987 when Bruce McNall became a part owner of the team. His boldest move was the 1988 trade with the Edmonton Oilers which saw the superstar Wayne Gretzky come to the Kings along with Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski for Jimmy Carter, Martin Gelinas, three first round picks and $15 million in cash. Gretzky had an immediate impact on the team as they finished second in the Smythe division.

Phoenix Coyotes   The Phoenix Coyotes started playing in Arizona in 1996, but the team has had a much longer history within professional hockey. They were once the Winnipeg Jets, a franchise conceived in 1967 when the team joined the Western Canada Junior Hockey League. The Jets owner Ben Hatskin joined the World Hockey Association in 1971 and had good success in the WHA, sporting super star Bobby Hull and winning three championships. As the WHA ran into problems, the Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League in the 1979 expansion.

San Jose Sharks   The San Jose Sharks franchise began to take shape in 1990. The NHL agreed for George and Gordon Gund to sell the Minnesota North Stars and get an expansion franchise in the San Francisco Bay area. The Sharks acquired players from the North Stars organization and the rest of the league through a special expansion draft. As their first ever draft pick, the Sharks selected WHL star Pat Fallon and added Ray Whitney and Sandis Ozolinsh. They began play as an NHL team at the Cow Palace in Daly City in the 1991-92 season.
