Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the original six NHL teams and were formed in September of 1926. A coffee millionaire by the name of Major Frederic McLaughlin invested $200,000 to purchase the Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League. The WHL teams were unable to compete with the higher paid NHL and so Major McLaughlin picked up the team in a fire sale and moved it to Chicago. The Major had served with the United States Army's 333rd Machine Gun battalion in World War I and belonged to the 85th Blackhawk division. He liked the name and also knew that a 'Chief Black Hawk' roamed the midwest, so the nickname seemed like a natural. In 1928 the Blackhawks moved from the Coliseum to the newly built 18,000 seat Chicago Statdium - the biggest NHL areana at that time.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus has had a history of professional hockey dating back to 1966. But the NHL did not make an entrance until the Columbus Blue Jackets were formed as Columbus, Ohio landed a National Hockey League expansion franchise in the summer of 1997. The Blue Jackets name chosen in 1997 pays homage to Ohio's contributions to American history. During the Civil War, Ohio made signinficant contributions to the Union Army and many of the uniforms worn by the Union soldiers were manufactured in Columbus. The team logo was based on the insect exemplifying qualities like hard work and resourcefulness that the community wished to highlight. The Blue Jackets hired former Florida Panthers coach Doug MacLean as their general manager and later that year in 1998 broke ground in downtown Columbus for the Nationwide Arena, future home of the Blue Jackets.

Detroit Redwings

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the NHL's original six teams and were formed in the fall of 1926 when a Detroit based syndicate bought into the National Hockey League for a sum of $100,000, with players from the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League. They started off by naming the team the Detroit Cougars and actually played their first season across the river in Windsor, Ontario. Despite the success of the Cougars when they were in the WHL, the new NHL team struggled for the first couple of season and finished out of the playoff race. In 1927 they moved to the new Olympia arena in Detroit and hired Jack Adams, who would go on to be their general manager for thirty five years. In 1930 the team changed its name to the Falcons, but in 1932 after being purchased by industrialist Jim Norris the name was changed for the third time in six years. The 'winged wheel' in their crest represented the predominant industry in the area and the Red Wings were officially born.

Nashville Predators

The Nashville Predators made their NHL debut in the 1998-99 season. The expansion franchise was officially accepted into the league in the summer of 1997, owned by Leipold Hockey Holdings LLC and were slated to play in the brand new Nashville Arena. The team name "Predators" was announced by majority owner Craig Leipold and President Jack Diller. For their logo, the Predators chose the image of a sabre-toothed tiger which was native in prehistoric times to what is today the Nashville area. They also hired veteran Washington Capitals general manager David Poile and brought in Barry Trotz as the franchise's first coach. The Predators began to build their team through in the 1998 amateur entry draft with the selection of highly regarded Ontario Hockey League prospect, David Legwand.

St. Louis Blues

St. Louis, Missouri heralded in the game of hockey in 1967. The St. Louis Blues were one of the six NHL expansion teams joining the league that year and played at the St. Louis Arena. The franchise's first game was at home against fellow expansion foes, the Minnesota North Stars and the teams played to a 2-2 tie. Under the coaching of Scotty Bowman the Blues had a memorable run in their inaugural season. Beating all odds, they defeated the Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota North Stars in their first two rounds of the playoffs, to face off against the venerable Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup finals. The Blues played a close, defensive style of hockey but lost to the powerhouse Canadiens.
