Atlanta Thrashers

In the summer of 1997, the National Hockey League awarded one of three expansion franchises to Atlanta. The Thrashers name was derived from Georgia's state bird - the Brown Thrasher and the logo was designed to put forth a feeling of speed. The Thrashers played their first game on October 2, 1999, losing 4-1 to the New Jersey Devils. They earned their first NHL regular season point later that week, tieing the Buffalo Sabres 5-5. Their first victory came a week later when Damian Rhodes shutout the New York Islanders 2-0 in Long Island.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes can trace their history back to the World Hockey Association (WHA) and Hartford, Connecticut. The team was founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the WHA. The team made their debut in 1972 playing out of Boston. They won the WHA's Avco Wold Trophy in their inaugural season. The Whalers moved into the new Hartford Civic center in 1975. In 1977 they featured three Howes in their lineup; Gordie along with his sons Mark and Marty. The team joined the NHL in 1979 and officially changed its name to the Hartford Whalers..

Florida Panthers

With the Tampa Bay Lightning proving that hockey was viable in Florida, by 1992 the NHL was back looking at potential expansion teams in the Sunshine state. With the backing of Wayne Huizenga, the NHL accepted the Miami expansion application in the winter of 1992. The team was scheduled to take to the ice in the 1993-94 season. In the spring of 1993, Bob Clarke was named team vice president and general manager of the club, William Torrey was appointed as president and the club was officially named the Florida Panthers.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightening were awarded an NHL expansion franchise in 1990. Financial woes plagued the bid from the get go and the process was almost scrapped until Kokusai Green came in with a fresh infusion of cash and a restructured deal was accepted by the NHL. In December of 1991 the NHL welcomed the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators expansion franchises.

Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals came to be in the summer of 1972 when contractor and NBA franchise owner Abe Pollin won out over eleven applicants for an NHL expansion franchise. The Caps would join the league in the 1974-75 season. Their first game was the home opener against the New York Rangers, a game the Capitals lost 6-3. They only managed 19 victories in their first two seasons, leading to the replacement of both general manager and coach. Schmidt was succeeded by Max McNab and Anderson was followed by Red Sullivan as coach of the Capitals.
